20.02.2012 The Week of Shrovetide Started in Russia

At the end of February (from February, 20 till February, 25) Russia celebrates one of the most vivid Slavic holidays – Shrovetide (Russian pancake week – known as Maslenitsa Festival) that dates back to ancient times.
The celebration dedicated to the end of winter and the spring’s arrival will take place in different districts of Khabarovsk on the last Saturday of February (February, 25). It will include such traditional activities as performances, games like “pillow fights”, “tug-of-war”, climbing a post with presents, horseback and sleigh rides and of course eating pancakes.
In the Southern District the celebration will start at 11 o’clock in “Delfin” and “Lukomor’e” recreation areas.
Different contests and a brass band concert will take place in the Central District, near the lower pond at 12o’clock.
The Northern District will start the show at 11 o’clock in the forest-park area “Voronezh-1”.
The citizens of the Railroad District will also have a chance to enjoy the holiday at 12 o’clock.
On the eve of the event different exhibitions, entertainment performances and sport competitions will take place.
