28.01.2013 Epiphany Bathing in Khabarovsk

On January, 19 christian people all over Russia celebrated Epiphany, one of earliest feasts of the Christian church. The holiday is dedicated to the baptism of Jesus Christ, with Christ revealing himself to the world as God's own Son. Believing that on this day water becomes holy and is imbued with special powers, Russians cut holes in the ice of lakes and rivers, often in the shape of the cross, to bathe in the freezing water.

In Khabarovsk celebrations began at 6:30 am with the holiday service at Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral. After the service an Epiphany procession that proceed to the central embankment took place.

Specially for people wishing to bath in the blessed water 5 bathing places were organized in Khabarovsk.
