03.10.2013 Khekhtsir Nature Reserve 50’s Anniversary


October 3, Khekhtsir Nature Reserve celebrated its 50’s anniversary since its foundation.

The Reserve is situated on Sikhote-Alin Mountain Range, 20 km south from Khabarovsk and occupies 450 square km. 90% of the territory is taken by taiga-forest, famous for a great variety of plants, 150 species of trees and shrubs and 500 species of herbs.

The peculiarity of Khekhtsir forest, also known as “the jugle of the north”, is a mixture of northern and southern nature. There you can see such representatives of southern and northern nature as the Korean pine, the red pine, different types of birch tree, Manchurian walnut, Manchurian ash, maple and wild grapes. Herbs known for its medical properties, like Eleutherococcus, relative to ginseng, Manchurian aralia and lemongrass also grow there in abundance.

Khekhtsir forest is also characterized by 222 species of birds, 45 species of fish, 8 species of reptiles, 6 species of amphibians and 50 species of mammals. Among the main representatives of the Reserve wild life are brown bear, Himalayan bear, fox, wild boar, Manchurian moose and the most exotic animal of the Far East of Russia - Ussuri tiger, also known as Siberian tiger or Amur tiger.

Currently, Khekhtsir Nature Reserve is considered to be one of the main places of interest, located in the suburbs of Khabarovsk, among tourists.
